How to improve memory for kids — what works and what only looks like help

A child studies in the evening and remembers half of it by morning. Usually this is not ability and not laziness, but study method, sleep and how many things are happening at once.

In short

Before deciding a child has a "bad memory", check three things: how much they sleep, the conditions they study in, and whether they have any method of memorising beyond repetition. In most cases changing those three does more than any exercise. If it does not help, start with the free memory and attention test — it shows where the difficulty sits. And if the difficulty also touches speech, reading or behaviour, that is a matter for a psychologist, not for a course.

What to check before training anything

Four things that pass themselves off as a bad memory.

  • 1SleepA short-slept child does not retain — not a matter of character: consolidation happens at night.
  • 2A phone next to the notebookStudy broken by notifications every few minutes leaves no trace.
  • 3Everything the night beforeMaterial covered in one evening is gone in days. The same minutes spread across a week behave differently.
  • 4No methodIf the only method is repeating until it sticks, it is not the memory failing — it is the method.

Three kinds of memory people mean

Parents ask about "memory", but the difficulty sits in different places — and each is handled differently.

Short-term memory

Holds information for seconds. If a child forgets an errand on the way to their room, this is the one.

Working memory

Holds several things at once and works on them: mental arithmetic, following a long sentence, solving a word problem.

Long-term memory

What stays for weeks and years. It depends on how the material was encoded and on repetitions spaced over time.

What to change this week

Four changes that cost nothing and act faster than any course.

  • 1A fixed bedtime for seven daysThe most underrated change. It usually shows within days — first in attention, then in memory.
  • 2The phone out of the roomNot "on silent" — in another room. Lying face-down on the desk is enough to pull attention back every few minutes.
  • 3Review tomorrow, in three days, in a weekOne minute each time. This single change moves material from one-day memory to one-month memory.
  • 4One image a dayOne date, definition or word turned into a vivid picture. That is where every memory technique begins.

Where we can help

We do not treat memory — we teach a method of memorising and make sure the child uses it.

  • 1The free test firstFifteen minutes show where the difficulty sits: memory, attention or processing speed.
  • 2Class with a coach90 minutes once a week, groups of 5–10 children, online.
  • 3Daily practiceA few minutes a day on the platform — without it the technique never becomes a habit.
  • 4A parent viewThe month map shows every day: done or skipped.

When it is not a matter of exercises

Memory exercises are neither a diagnosis nor a treatment. In these cases a specialist comes first.

  • 1Reading and writing are affected tooIf a child confuses letters, loses their place in a text or writes far slower than the class — ask for an assessment.
  • 2A sudden changeThe child used to retain well and stopped. It is worth finding out what happened around then and talking to a psychologist.
  • 3Difficulty everywhereNot only in study, but in play, conversation and everyday tasks. That is a signal to start with a specialist.

Who teaches

Space Memory was founded by Natalia and Karolina Lubenets — the team behind the Indigo Mental Club network of mental arithmetic schools. Coaches are selected strictly: one candidate in eight makes it.

What we can back up

Only what we can show.

The Indigo Mental Club team

Space Memory was built by the same team as the Indigo mental arithmetic school network.

A test built on classic tasks

The free assessment uses tasks known from cognitive psychology: Corsi, digit span, Flanker, Go/No-Go, matrices, N-back, reaction time.

A certificate per level

Finish a level, get a certificate; parents follow progress on the month map.

What parents say

Questions and answers

Is poor memory in a child a health problem?

Usually not. Most often it comes down to sleep, study conditions and the absence of a method. But if reading, writing or everyday tasks are affected too, start with a professional assessment.

What is working memory and why does everyone mention it?

It is the ability to hold several things at once and work on them: mental arithmetic, following a long sentence, solving a word problem. A lot of school difficulty comes from here.

Do supplements improve a child's memory?

That is a question for a doctor; we do not give health advice. What we can say is that sleep, breaks and study method change results visibly.

How long before something changes?

Changes in study conditions show within a week or two. A new memorising method needs a few weeks of short daily practice.

How do I check my child's memory at home?

The simplest way is our free test: 15 minutes, seven tasks, instant result, no sign-up. It is not a diagnosis, but it shows where to look.

Will a child with difficulties cope in a group?

Groups are 5–10 children, so the coach sees everyone. If the test shows a different kind of help is needed, we will say so plainly.

Does this help with exam preparation?

Yes, because we teach working with concrete material — dates, definitions, vocabulary and text — rather than remembering in general.
