Speed reading for kids — pace and comprehension together

Live online classes for children aged 8–18. Your child reads faster and understands what they read — because pace without comprehension is just turning pages.

  • 90 minutes once a week
  • Groups of 5–10 children
  • Pace measured every month

In short

Speed reading is not flipping pages faster. It is three things at once: a wider eye span, fewer jumps back to what was already read, and less silent pronouncing of words. At Space Memory children aged 8–18 train this in live online groups of 5–10 — 90 minutes once a week — plus short daily practice. We measure pace together with comprehension: speed on its own does not count.

Why a child reads slowly

Almost always three habits nobody corrected, not ability.

  • 1Jumping backThe eye returns to the same sentence several times. The child does not notice, and reading time doubles.
  • 2Silent pronouncingThe text is "spoken" in the head, so pace can never exceed speaking pace.
  • 3A narrow eye spanThe eye takes one word instead of a group, and the sentence falls apart into pieces.
  • 4Reading without a purposeThe child does not know what to look for — and with no question in mind, nothing sticks.

What we train in class

Pace and comprehension are always trained together, never separately.

Eye span

Exercises that widen what the eye takes in at once.

No regressions

Guiding the eye so it stops returning to what has already been read.

Reading comprehension

After every text: what was it about, what mattered, what did you remember.

Retelling in own words

A short summary — the real test of whether the text was understood.

Exercises you can do at home

Four exercises with no materials — a book, a timer and a few minutes.

  • 1A baseline measurementThe child reads aloud for one minute; count the words and ask for a one-sentence summary. Write the result down — you will have something to compare with in a month.
  • 2Finger as a guideThe child runs a finger under the line slightly faster than they normally read. The finger stops the eye from going back. 5 minutes a day.
  • 3Reading with a questionAsk one question before the text that the child has to answer. A purpose changes how they read more than any technique.
  • 4Three sentences after the textWhat it was about, what mattered, what was surprising. This is a comprehension exercise, not a memory one.

How a reading class runs

In every class the child reads, measures and answers questions — in that order.

  • 1Eye warm-upA few minutes on eye span and guiding the gaze without jumping back.
  • 2A text with a questionThe child gets a question before the text, reads against the clock, then answers and retells.
  • 3Measure and recordTwo numbers after each text: words per minute and answer accuracy.
  • 4Reading between classesShort texts on the platform and the child's own book: five minutes a day rather than an hour once a week.

How to track progress

Compare your child with the same child a month ago, not with a table of norms.

  • 1Once a monthThe same method every time: one minute of reading aloud plus a summary.
  • 2Always two numbersWords per minute and the answer about content. Either number alone means nothing.
  • 3Write it downWithout a record the progress is invisible and the child loses interest quickly.

Measurement instead of promises

Pace and comprehension are measured monthly, so progress shows up as numbers.

Questions and answers

Does speed reading hurt comprehension?

It does if you train pace alone. That is why after every text the child answers questions and retells it in their own words — without that we do not count the result.

What age does this make sense for?

From about 8–9, once reading is fluent. Before that the work is on reading technique itself, not on pace.

How many words per minute should a child read?

Instead of comparing with a table, measure your own child and repeat in a month. What matters is the change — and whether comprehension grows with the pace.

Is there a speed reading test for kids?

Yes, and you can run it at home in three minutes: one minute of reading aloud, count the words, ask for a summary. Repeat monthly.

Does the child have to read aloud?

Only for the measurement. Day to day we train silent reading — that is what school actually requires.

How long before there is a difference?

First changes usually show after a few weeks of short daily practice.

Are classes online only?

Yes, all classes are online — children join from any city or country.
