What gets called poor memory and is not
The three most common mistakes in a home diagnosis.
- Material that never came back — Studying once with no returns gives exactly the same picture as poor memory. The difference shows after a week with three short reviews.
- Trouble with one subject only — When everything else goes normally, the cause is usually a gap in material from a year ago, not in remembering.
- Mess and lost things — Kit left at school and homework not written down is more often about the shape of the day than about memory. A list on the door tests that, not exercises.
A fortnight of watching, six things to write down
A sheet on the fridge and one sentence a day is enough. After two weeks you have material for a conversation instead of impressions.
- When it happens
Morning or evening, on which subject, after how many minutes of work. If everything falls apart after eight in the evening, that is a lead about the time of day, not about memory.
- Whether it is only schoolwork
Write down situations outside lessons too: instructions at home, the way to a friend's house, the names of new people. This is the most important column in the whole table.
- Hearing and sight
Do they ask for things to be repeated, mix up similar-sounding words, sit close to the screen, squint at the board. An eye and ear check is often a shorter road than a year of tutoring.
- How much sleep, really
The hour of falling asleep and of waking for fourteen days. Not roughly — by the clock, because the gap between “about ten” and midnight is enormous.
- Since when
Always, or from some point on. A sudden change after an illness, a head injury, a move or a loss in the family is a lead of its own.
- What the school sees
One question to the class teacher: do they see the same thing in lessons. A mismatch between home and school is information too.
If the difficulties appeared suddenly, and also touch speech, orientation or everyday tasks — do not wait a fortnight. Then the first step is a doctor, not observation.
What the observation diary looks like after a fortnight
The same fourteen days written down two ways. It decides whether the conversation at the service or the doctor's gets anywhere.
A record there is nothing to discuss
- “They forget everything all the time.”
- “It has been worse for a while, I think.”
- “School says it varies.”
- The specialist gets a parent's impression rather than an observation — and has to start from nothing, which means asking for exactly what you did not write down.
A record you can start from
- “Loses three-step instructions — 9 times in 14 days, always after seven in the evening.”
- “On one subject (maths) it falls apart after 10 minutes; on the others they work 20–25 minutes.”
- “Twice asked for a question to be repeated from across the room; with the television on, does not react to their name.”
- “Sleep: falls asleep 22:40–23:30, wakes 6:45. Seven hours twenty on average.”
- “It has been like this since September, not before. The class teacher changed in September.”
- “The class teacher sees the same thing in afternoon lessons, not in the morning.”
The second record makes no diagnosis — and that is exactly what makes it useful. It shows that the thing happens in the evenings, on one subject and from a particular moment, and separately it raises a question about hearing. Three different leads and three different addresses.
The three-instruction test — this evening
Two minutes. It is not an assessment and not a measure of memory — it is a way to see where the instruction gets lost, before deciding the child is not listening.
- Three instructions in one sentence
“Get socks from the drawer, take the mug to the kitchen and bring me a pen.” Once, in a normal voice, without repeating.
- Count what came back
How many of the three things were done, and in what order. Write it down.
- The same three, one at a time
Another day: the same, only each instruction on its own, the next one only after the previous is done.
- A third version: have them repeat it
Three instructions at once, but the child first says them back in their own words, and only then goes.
If everything comes back with single instructions and after repeating, and only one of three comes back when all three are given at once, this is not a memory problem and not disobedience but a crowded work surface, and it is solved by splitting instructions. If things get lost even when instructions come one at a time, write that in the diary: it is one of the concrete things a specialist will ask about.
Do not do this as a test and do not comment on the result in front of the child. It is an observation for you, not a mark for them.
How we know what not to promise here
Two papers behind the caution of this text.
Melby-Lervåg and Hulme, 2013 — a meta-analysis of working memory training
Working memory exercises improve the score on the exercises themselves and do not carry over to grades or to reading. That is why we do not offer a course as an answer to a suspected difficulty.
Simons et al., 2016 — a review of “brain training” programmes
The evidence for brain-training programmes is weak, and the improvement usually concerns the trained task itself. The same goes for the apps advertised to parents of children struggling at school.
We do not diagnose and are not qualified to — this text only helps put observations in order before a conversation with someone who does.
When it is worth going further than tutoring
Four situations where changing the study method alone is usually not enough.
The difficulties are everywhere, not only at school
Losing instructions, everyday tasks and the thread of a conversation goes beyond studying and needs a specialist's eye.
Reading and writing are clearly worse than the rest
Confused letters, slow reading and mistakes in simple words are a lead for the educational psychology service.
The child holds attention on nothing
Including the things they like. That is an observation for a specialist; the conclusion is theirs, not the parent's and not the coach's.
The change came suddenly
It was fine, and stopped being fine within a few weeks. Suddenness matters more than the symptom itself and deserves a medical consultation.
Teacher and counsellorThe serviceDoctor — hearing, sightWho to take what to
Three addresses in the order they are usually visited.
| Who | What with, and what to expect |
|---|---|
| The class teacher and the school counsellor | The first conversation, usually within a week |
| The public educational psychology service | An assessment of learning difficulties, on a parent's request |
| A doctor: paediatrician, optician, ENT | When the lead points to hearing, sight or a sudden change |
A starting point
The free test is three short game-like tasks: memory, attention and reasoning. It is not a diagnostic assessment — it only gives a number you start from and can come back to.

What we do not do
Space Memory is a school, not a clinic: we teach memorising techniques and how to work with material, we do not assess or treat. If we see signals from the list above in the first conversation, we say so plainly and point to a specialist rather than signing the child up for a course.
Parents' questions
Is poor memory in a child an illness?
The phrase itself is not a diagnosis. Very different situations sit behind that description — from unslept nights to difficulties that need assessing. That is why you start with observation, not with a label.
How do we get an assessment?
Through the school first, then the public educational psychology service, which a parent can usually approach directly. The rules differ by country: our school is based in Poland, where that service is free and needs no medical referral — elsewhere, ask the school which service covers your area.
Should we sign the child up for classes meanwhile?
If the difficulties are about studying only — yes, the two do not exclude each other. If they cover everyday tasks, it is better to find the cause first.
My child forgets what I said five minutes ago. Is that normal?
In school-age children it happens, and it usually concerns instructions thrown out in passing or several at once. It is worrying when it happens daily and also with things the child wants to remember.
Do memory supplements help?
We do not advise on preparations — that is a question for a doctor. From our side we can only speak about the way of studying.
What if the school says everything is fine?
Write down two weeks of observations and come back with specifics: dates, situations, times. That sheet makes a different conversation than a general “they do not remember”.
Pages that take the separate leads apart.
